How to Start a Profitable Infused Pre-Roll Line

I’ve made the mistakes, burned the cash, and figured out what actually works. This guide will save you time, money, and headaches. Jordan Reyes writes from the production floor, not a conference room. He’s helped brands go from test batches to top sellers. Former ops lead. Full-time problem solver. Still thinks a clean Dutch crown is the best flex in the game.

Let me just say this up front. Launching an infused pre-roll line can feel like stepping off a cliff without a parachute.

It’s exciting. It’s risky. And if you’re not careful, it’ll eat your margins before you’ve even printed your first label.

When I got started, I didn’t have a blueprint. Just a hunch that infused joints were about to explode, and a whole lot of questions. Maybe you’re in that place right now. Wondering where to start, which machines to buy, what kind of flower to use, how to infuse it… and most of all, how to make a profit.

I’ve been there. And I’m here to make sure you don’t waste time or cash like I did.

Here’s what I learned.

Why Infused Pre-Rolls Are a No-Brainer

Let me ask you something. What’s the fastest-growing product in cannabis right now?

It’s not vapes. It’s not gummies.

It’s infused pre-rolls.

And honestly, it’s not even close. In some states, they already make up over half of pre-roll sales. Consumers want high potency. They want flavor. And they want convenience. Infused joints give them all three.

When I saw this shift, I realized something. If you’re already doing pre-rolls and you’re not offering an infused pre roll line, you’re leaving money on the table. Big money.

I met a group in Michigan who had this exact problem. They were crushing it with their regular joints, but growth hit a wall. Then they launched a single infused SKU. One product. That alone started bringing in more than 30 percent of their total revenue within 60 days.

No joke. It changed their business.

Infused pre-rolls let you stand out. They command higher price points. And when you build them right, they’re more profitable than anything else you can roll.

That’s why I call it a no-brainer.

Let’s get into how to do it right.

Step 1: Pick Your Infusion Method (Carefully)

You’ve got three main ways to infuse a joint:

Oil Injection – You inject distillate, rosin, or live resin into the core. Clean burn. Potent. Repeatable.

Dusting or Coating – You roll the outside in kief or THCa. Flashy, but messy and hard to scale.

Homogenized Blends – You mix oil and flower together before packing. Easier to automate, but harder to control.

I’ve tried all three. Injection won every time.

Why? Control.

I use the STM Astro Infuser. It lets me set exactly how much oil I want in each joint. I’m talking milligram-level precision. That’s key if you want to pass lab testing and keep your margins tight.

But here’s the catch. You need level, tightly packed joints. If your cones are loose, you’ll clog your needles or get uneven burns.

Step 2: Use the Right Cannabis Material

Here’s where a lot of folks screw up. They use good oil but pair it with weak flower.

That won’t cut it.

Let’s break it down:

Fresh-milled flower is the gold standard. You control everything. Moisture. Terpenes. Grind size.

Popcorn buds are fine too. Just make sure you mill them right.

Trim can work if it’s high-quality and properly cured. Don’t use shake and hope for the best.

On the concentrate side:

Distillate is easy to work with. Affordable. Great for starter SKUs.

Live resin adds flavor and effect. Worth it for mid to high-end joints.

Rosin is premium. Solventless. It costs more, but you can charge more.

Diamonds and sauce look cool but are hard to work with unless you’re blending.

Consistency is everything. Don’t mix oil batches. Don’t eyeball dosages. That’s how you end up with failed COAs and returned product.

Step 3: Pack and Close Like a Pro

Let me be honest. My first run of infused joints was a disaster.

They were loose. Uneven. And when I tried to inject oil, it leaked or clogged or just pooled at the bottom. It was bad.

Then I bought the STM Mini RocketBox.

Game changer.

It packs joints so flat and even, it almost looks machine-made. Every cone is ready for injection. I don’t get oil leaks anymore.

And to finish them off, I use the STM Atomic Closer. Best Dutch crown I’ve seen. Sharp. Consistent. It gives my joints that finished, pro look dispensaries expect.

That clean crown also helps seal the top during oil injection. No leaks. No stickiness.

Step 4: Keep It Simple with SKUs

Don’t launch ten SKUs. That’s a quick way to burn through inventory and confuse buyers.

Here’s what worked for me:

Starter SKU – 1g distillate-infused joint, Dutch crown, around $15 retail

Premium SKU – 1g rosin-infused joint in a glass tube, around $22 to $25 retail

Multipack – Five 0.5g minis in a resealable pouch. Huge hit in adult-use states

Start with two or three. Make them great. Expand from there based on what sells.

Step 5: SOPs Are Your Lifeline

I used to think SOPs were just paperwork.

Then I lost a $40,000 order because one of my team members changed the injection setting. Half the batch came out underfilled. Failed potency tests. Product destroyed.

Now, we log everything. Grind size. Oil temp. Volume per cone. Batch numbers.

We even do in-house potency tests before sending anything to the lab.

Once we tightened up our SOPs, we stopped having rejections. It’s not just about compliance. It’s about staying in business.

Step 6: Packaging That Sells

If you’re charging $20 for a joint, you can’t throw it in a plastic tube with a barcode sticker and call it a day.

Use:

Glass tubes with custom caps

Matte-finish pouches or tins

Tamper-proof seals and COA links

Your packaging tells a story. Make it look like something people want to hold, not something they toss in the back seat.

Step 7: Price Based on Market, Not Guesswork

Here’s the thing. Infused pre-roll pricing changes depending on where you are.

A distillate joint that sells for $13 in Colorado might go for $22 in Maryland or Missouri. I’ve seen rosin joints in New York retail for over $30.

Use platforms like LeafLink or talk to buyers directly. Know your competition. Shop your own category.

Rough cheat sheet for now (can vary greatly by state):

$10–12 – Basic distillate, 0.5g

$15–20 – 1g live resin or rosin

$25+ – Multipacks, premium drops

Don’t aim to be the cheapest unless you have at least a few SKU’s. Be the most consistent. That’s what keeps you on shelves.

What Most People Forget When Launching

There are a few things I wish someone had told me.

First, infused joints get more testing scrutiny. Potency. Even distribution. Burn rate. Make sure your SOPs cover all of that before you send your first batch to the lab.

Second, check your licenses. Some states require a separate endorsement for infused products. I nearly lost six weeks of production in Arizona because I didn’t catch a labeling detail.

Third, you need a sell-in strategy. Budtenders won’t push your product if they’ve never smoked it. Give them samples. Bring promo packs. Include a clean COA and a one-pager with your story.

And last, know your market. In California, people want blunts. In Maryland, multipacks fly off shelves. Build SKUs for what your region wants. Not what’s easiest to make.

Final Profit Tips That Actually Work

1. Use modular machines. The STM Mini-RocketBox+, Astro Infuser, and Atomic Closer let you grow without overspending.

2. Track every milliliter. Oil is profit. Don’t waste a drop.

3. Buy packaging in bulk. I saved 28 percent switching from monthly to quarterly orders.

4. Bundle up. Pair infused pre-rolls with regular ones to increase order value.

5. Automate early. Labor is your silent profit killer.

6. Pilot small batches. Let your market tell you what to scale.

The Bottom Line

Infused pre-rolls are not a trend. They are the future of the pre-roll category.

They saved my brand. They kept my facility running when flower sales dipped. And now, they’re my most profitable line.

But you’ve got to do it right.

Start small. Stay consistent. Build a system that scales.

And if you’re stuck or overwhelmed, get help. Talk to people who’ve done it. Book a demo with STM Canna. Learn how other operators are rolling millions of infused pre-rolls without breaking the bank.

You’ve got this.

And I’ll be rooting for you.

Let’s roll.
